These jewels are from the Trichocereus family, or the Nocturnal Cactus, native to the Sonoran Desert where Michael lives. These special flowers bloom incredibly only once a year! To photograph these stunning beauties, Michael waits long hours into the night to capture the single bloom you see here. The flowers wilt at the first light of dawn. Photographing these special awakenings is in tune with Michael's philosophy of "mindfulness" -- paying attention to and living in the moment. "I make a metnal note, and start the daily attendance to these gems ... the bloom will start to slowly open after sundown. I awaken at 3 in the morning, and look for the best way to present this wonder of nature. Should I be called out of town, the flower will still bloom, and I will wait until the next year..."
